Dr. Heather Poma, Psychologist, IMFT-S, ABPP

When I was a senior in college, 9/11 happened. I had already decided to take some time off of school between school and graduate school in order to get some experience in the field before pursuing my doctorate. After September 11, I decided to instead become a Mental Health Specialist in the Army for four years before pursuing my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Regent University. While in graduate school, I chose to pursue specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. I completed my internship at the VA in Dayton. Finally, I completed a postdoctoral experience at a community mental health agency where I worked with more severely and persistently mentally ill.

Of course, I specialize heavily in couples’ therapy. I started working with couples in graduate school, getting education in couples education even before going to graduate school due to my interest in this area. I’m licensed as an independent marriage and family therapist with supervisory credentials in the state of Ohio. I am also board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in Couple and Family Psychology. This indicates that I’m an expert in my field.

Most of my work is with individual clients, and am an expert in working with individuals with trauma (military/veteran and sexual trauma) due to my experience . During my time in the VA and the military I have helped many find peace despite traumatic experiences, learning to put those events in their proper place in their lives. However, I have often worked with individuals with concerns such as anxiety and depression, with experience working with people with rarer concerns, such as bipolar disorder and dissociative identity disorder as well. With all my clients, we talk about their values and how they influence their functioning, concerns, and strengths, which is part of my training from Regent University.

In addition to working as a therapist with clients themselves, I also have experience and am currently seeking supervision clients who are interested in furthering their development in their craft.
